Over 40’s Seek Youth Injection

With a paper thin squad and a real lack of 40 year olds around Chester, the Vets had a tough task away at Upton. The team tipped for the wooden spoon certainly lived up to the tag with a lack lustre batting display, with only Andy Robinson making a serious contribution to the score. Chairman Gilson did manage to get Fleet to complete a fully ran four, which many will be aware was a first (and probably last). With Jeremy Jordan injured from celebrating Crystal Palaces equalizer on Monday night, and several regulars unavailable, the batting order was lacking in its unusual depth.

After mustering just 96, the over 40’s knew they would have to field with real energy and bowl with skill to defend the low target. Don Speakman, just days after his call up to the England over 80’s, took the gloves and he had to be on the ball with the returning Jim Law who had the ball in his hand, took the roll of strike bowler on.

Sadly on the night Upton were too strong and knocked the runs off 3 down.  And although early in the season, the team will look to recruit and inject fresh life into an ageing group. There will be a recruitment drive in the bar every Saturday night.

Roll on next week.
